Venice packing essentials
The single most important packing decision for Venice is your footwear. You will walk 8–15 km per day on uneven stone bridges and cobblestones. Comfort and grip matter far more than style. In winter, waterproof ankle boots are essential — acqua alta can flood St Mark's Square and surrounding streets with 10–30 cm of water, and the raised walkways (passerelle) are narrow.
In summer, avoid sandals without ankle straps — bridges are slippery when wet. A light backpack works better than rolling luggage, which is difficult to carry over hundreds of bridges.
