When is the best time to go to Venice?

The shoulder seasons — April–May and September–October — offer the best balance of mild weather, manageable crowds and reasonable hotel rates. Avoid mid-July to mid-August if you dislike extreme heat and wall-to-wall tourists.

January and February are the quietest and cheapest months (outside Carnival week), and the occasional acqua alta and winter mist give Venice a magical, melancholy atmosphere. Early September brings the Venice Film Festival and slightly thinner crowds than August, making it another favourite.

Acqua alta (high water flooding) peaks October–January. Raised walkways (passerelle) are deployed across St Mark's Square. It rarely disrupts travel significantly, but pack ankle-height waterproof footwear in winter.
